Help Stop Conversion Efforts

Conversion efforts impact people on a daily basis right here in the Okanagan and across Canada. Our focus is on stopping these harmful practices in our community.

Conversion efforts (SOGIECE) refer to a broad set of treatments, practices, or sustained efforts that aim to repress, discourage, or change a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

SOGIECE can be done by licensed therapists, life coaches, unlicensed ministers, and happens in one-on-one sessions or group sessions. It can be fee-based or free. Faith-based conversion efforts are carried out across a broad range of mainly Catholic and evangelical organizations. It is important to note that many religious organizations have also been leading the way and fully in support of stopping SOGIECE.

The potential risks of reparative therapy are great, including depression, anxiety and self-destructive behaviour, since therapist alignment with societal prejudices against homosexuality may reinforce self-hatred already experienced by the patient.

How Can You Help?

Our Kelowna Task Force is a group of volunteers dedicated to bringing focus to the harmful impacts of SOGIECE in our community through public discourse, political engagement, and education. Through this focus, we will work to reduce these efforts and provide support to those who are suffering from the trauma they have caused.

You can help by donating needed funds to this project to assist with our campaigns and overhead costs such as web presence and non-profit regulatory requirements. Every little bit helps and is greatly appreciated!

“What should have been a time of beauty, love, and hope had turned into a dark hole of self doubt. I began to question why God had, in fact made me queer. If He hated homosexuality so much, why would he have created me?”

— Kim Perpete, a member of the queer community in the Okanagan who recently experienced conversion efforts.

We are a registered non-profit and not a charitable organization. Donations are gratefully accepted however are not eligible for tax receipts.
