November News: AGM Results, Advocacy Efforts, and Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil

Happy November!

First and foremost, a heartfelt apology for the punctuation, formatting, and word duplication errors in our last newsletter. It was a humbling experience, to say the least.

As a classic multitasker, I tend to move quickly, but I’m learning to pause, breathe, and focus, especially with deadlines looming. While it might be common sense for some, as we head into the holiday season — a time that can be challenging for many — I encourage you to take a moment to breathe, check in on yourself, and reach out to those around you.

A message from our President, Wilbur Turner

Yesterday, we gathered for Advocacy Canada’s third Annual General Meeting. Reflecting on our journey, one thing became clear: the strength of our advocacy is rooted in the unwavering support from the communities we live in and serve. It’s inspiring to see this shared commitment and solidarity—a reminder of the power we hold when we come together in times of need.

As we face increasing political tensions and disturbing attempts to scapegoat the 2SLGBTQIA+ community as a source of societal issues, it is more important than ever that we stand united. We are witnessing efforts to roll back rights, misrepresent our community, and sow division. These challenges underscore the importance of collective resistance and advocacy.

In the months ahead, let us continue to link arms, amplify each other’s voices, and push forward with resilience and resolve.

Thank you for your dedication and support.

Wilbur Turner

ICYMI (In Case You Missed It)

In October and November, we ramped up our advocacy efforts, focusing on key 2SLGBTQIA+ issues and deserved freedoms:

  • Sent out surveys to over 300 provincial election candidates
  • Supported the Point-in-Time (PiT) count in Kelowna
  • Issued media releases on Alberta’s anti-trans legislation and SOGI 123 in BC schools
  • Facilitated focus groups for our Community Hub

The Political Landscape

The recent elections in BC and the USA have brought a lot of fear of the unknown and we at Advocacy Canada want you to know that we stand with all of you. While there is sadness, anxiety, and fear, keep in mind that several transgender politicians were elected or re–elected in this election, abortion rights were codified in some states, and California voted to remove the ban on marriage equality from its constitution.

As an organization committed to equality and amplifying queer voices, we’ll keep fighting for rights in Canada and we won’t forget that we’re not just fighting for ourselves. Support agencies are listed on the website resources page.

On the Horizon

Advocacy Canada is holding a candlelight vigil in Kelowna on November 20th at 7pm at Stuart Park for Transgender Day of Remembrance. We will be gathering on the stairs facing City Hall.  Some electric candles will be available but we encourage you to bring your own or check out your app store for options. We are looking for a few artists from the trans community to share spoken word or poetry with attendees during the vigil.  Interested or know someone who is? Email us at communications@advocacy-canada.lgbt.
