The 2SLGBTQIA+ community is under attack. In the past 3 years, we have witnessed a staggering rise in anti-2SLGBTQIA+ hate. Hate-motivated violence targeting 2SLGBTQIA+ communities is on the rise. Drag spaces are under protest. Visible community leaders are being targeted online. There are efforts to roll back inclusion in our schools, and attacks on essential gender-affirming healthcare have become far too familiar.
The Kelowna queer community is not immune to this. Numerous protests have been held outside of queer events, an anti-2SLGBTQIA+ billboard was put up, hate-filled comments on any local news story involving the queer community number in the thousands, and local school administrators and trustees are being harassed for supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ students.
Advocacy Canada is spearheading a community-based positive messaging campaign to lift the spirits of the Kelowna queer community. Four digital billboards with uplifting messages and art will be displayed in Kelowna and Lake Country over a four week period. The billboard art will also be used to fund community projects through merchandising apparel, buttons, and stickers.
A focus group of community members is working to develop a theme and message which will then be given to local Indigenous queer artist, Sarah Jones who has been commissioned to create the image for the billboards.
Advocacy Canada is offering an opportunity to organizations and individuals for financial sponsorship of this campaign. Funds raised through sponsorship will go toward paying campaign expenses, including artist fees, and billboard advertising.
