Announcing the Kelowna 50+ Pride Network

Kelowna Senior Pride Network

Advocacy-Canada.lgbt is launching the Kelowna 50+ Pride Network to support area LGBTQ2S+ seniors. The objective of this network is to provide opportunities for age 50+ Kelowna seniors who identify as LGBTQ2S+ and their allies to connect. The network will be initially supported through the Kelowna Senior Pride Network Facebook group.

The network is being created to not only provide the elders of the LGBTQ2S+ community an opportunity for social connections, but will also provide a forum for discussions on housing, health, education, employment, advocacy, and other important matters.

Based on Census Canada data there are over 85,000 seniors age 50 and over in the Kelowna metropolitan area. In June 2021 Census Canada announced that based on the 2018 census data, 4% of Canadians ages 15 and older identify as LGBTQ2S+. This would indicate there are approximately 3,400 individuals in the Kelowna metropolitan area who are age 50+ and identify as LGBTQ2S+.

We are seeking volunteers who are interested in being on an advisory panel for this network. Expressions of interest may be submitted through our contact form.

LGBTQ2S+ seniors face unique challenges and it is hoped this network will also create opportunities for allied service organizations to be recognized. For local organizations that provide services for seniors with specific policies and practices designed for LGBTQ2S+ seniors, we would like to hear from you.
