Finding Faith, Finding Community
For many in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, the search for spiritual connection can be a daunting journey. Traditional places of worship don’t always offer the welcoming and inclusive environment and may even be triggering. Advocacy Canada has created a valuable resource: a list of safe and affirming spaces for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. This resource will guide you toward organizations that celebrate diversity, promote love, and offer a genuine sense of belonging.
A Sanctuary of Acceptance
As the colder months approach, many seek solace and community within their faith. One such sanctuary, The Central Okanagan United Church (COUC) is committed to creating a welcoming space for all. COUC embraces diversity and strives to embody their vision statement: “To seek, experience, and express God’s love together in an open community which embraces diversity and demonstrates by faithful actions the love of God through the teachings of Jesus.”
Delaine, serves as the Administration & Communication lead at COUC, emphasizes the importance of such spaces: “We find that many queer people don’t know we are down here operating in the way we do, and it is always good to remind folx of the safe and welcoming space that COUC offers for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, especially as we enter the fall and winter when we find many people find church a place they like to be.“

If you’re part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and are seeking a place of spiritual belonging, the Central Okanagan United Church’s open and affirming congregation offers a supportive environment where you can connect with others, and grow in your faith.
